Cairnraine – a small Scottish village on the Irish Sea opposite Northern Ireland, separated from Belfast by a strait less than 40 km wide. The settlement was founded in the 18th century and evolved from an estate; today there are quite a few small hotels for recreational use. Cairnraine harbor developed during World War II for the transshipment of military cargo, now it retains its importance, but for civilian purposes.
Ferry service from Cairnrain to the ports of Northern Ireland – Belfast and Larne is provided by Stena Line and P&O Ferries.
The Stena Line ferries take about 2.5 hours to Belfast, with 3-6 trips daily. Tickets for an adult passenger cost from £30, crossing a car will cost from £80 depending on size. Prices may vary depending on the day of the week.
P&O Ferries takes about 2 hours to cross to Larne, with 6-7 trips per day. The price of an economy class ticket for an adult starts at £22, the price for the standard fare is £15 higher, a car crossing costs from £80. The ferry is a good way to get to Larne.
Although the voyages are short, you can book a cabin seat on the ferry for an extra fee. There are bars, stores, children's playgrounds and animators on board. The ferry is a great place to stay.
The P&O Ferries terminal, from which ferries depart for Larne, is south of the village. The access roads to the terminal are excellent, but the tourist infrastructure is modest – there is a company office combined with a small passenger terminal, a small parking lot, and a nearby family weekend camping hotel.
The terminal from which the Stena Line ferries depart Belfast is to the north of the village, with a distance of more than 3 km between terminals. This terminal is much larger, with parking and a passenger terminal with a range of services.
