Cairnraine – a small Scottish village on the Irish Sea opposite Northern Ireland, separated from Belfast by a strait less than 40 km wide. The settlement was founded in the 18th century and evolved from an estate; today there are quite a few small hotels for recreational use. Cairnraine harbor developed during World War II for the transshipment of military cargo, now it retains its importance, but for civilian purposes.

The terminal from which the Stena Line ferries depart Belfast is to the north of the village, with a distance of more than 3 km between terminals. This terminal is much larger, with parking and a passenger terminal with a range of services.
