The Øresund Bridge – the longest combined road-rail bridge in the EU, which connects Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden. The structure is a special construction including a bridge, an artificial island and a tunnel. It starts off the coast of Sweden and extends for eight kilometers to Peberholm, created specifically for the passage of vehicles. Then a special underwater tunnel of four kilometers leads to the Danish island of Amager.
The bridge and tunnel are part of the international European route E20 as well as of the Öresund line. Thanks to its construction it was possible to connect Central Europe and the Scandinavian Peninsula. Construction of the Oresundsbron bridge began in 1995, and its grand opening took place in 2000. Today the bridge is the main landmark of Denmark and the pride of Sweden.
The crossing is a four-lane highway (two lanes each way) and a two-lane railroad. Therefore, locals and visitors can get from Sweden to Denmark by almost any means of transport: by train, motorcycle, car, bus or truck. You can pay for the crossing in special booths, which accept euros, Danish and Swedish kroner, dollars, Norwegian kroner and Swiss francs. And for regular visitors there are discounts, which often reach 75%.
Train service is especially popular with tourists, but because of the trains there is often traffic jams on land, and additional flights can not be launched yet. So it is better to travel across the bridge in the early morning or late evening. Also, you must be prepared for the fact that you have to pay more than 50 euros for the ride. In order to save up to 50%, you must buy a card BroPas, which is suitable for those who are going to cross the bridge more than once.
There are more than eighty crossings over the Oresundsbron bridge every day by different means (car, bus or train). The average travel time – 10-20 minutes, provided there is no traffic on the road. Choosing a convenient way to cross, you can get from Copenhagen (Denmark) to Malmo (Sweden), and then back. Book train or car tickets for the crossing of the bridge Oresundsbron 1-2 days before the trip.
