Kavala is an important port hub in Northern Greece (Macedonia) on the coast of the Aegean Sea. The city has been known since antiquity as Neapolis, the Greeks, Bulgarians and Turks successively replaced each other and Kavala stores architectural monuments of all eras: the Byzantine fortress, the aqueduct of the time of Suleiman the Magnificent, the church of St. Paul (now Nicholas the Wonderworker), the town hall. Not far from the city is Mount Athos.
